<p>In an environment bombarded with ads about cholesterol-rich fast food fare and cheap junk foods, the good thing is that healthy eating trends care slowly holding their own, and are even changing the minds of more people. As more and more individuals are becoming knowledgeable about nutrition and healthy eating, they&#8217;re slowly pushing alternative healthy eating ideas into the mainstream of society. A recent European study has indicated that more consumers are beginning to notice that their food choices are making a big difference not only to their health, but to their environment and the countryside as well. Here are some of the popular healthy eating lifestyles a\that are quickly gaining more adherents.   </p>
<p><strong>Organic Food</strong></p>
<p>The organic food market is fast growing today, and more organic food items are widely available, as compared to what it was ten or fifteen years ago. The range of organic food choices are also increasing, because now it&#8217;s easy to find items like organic ketchup, organically-grown wheat and rice, and fertilizer or pesticide-free fruits and other food items. The organic food market is expected to grow tenfold in the coming years, and is definitely here to stay.  </p>
<p><strong>Vegetarianism</strong></p>
<p>Years back, the path to vegetarianism was a lonely and arduous once. Today however, the market for vegetarian foods is fast becoming more prevalent, and the choices have also tripled, or even quadrupled. Most restaurants have vegetarian options, and there&#8217;s even a thing called haute vegetarian cuisine. Going vegetarian is being viewed by many as a great way for reducing your carbon footprint, as well as for maintaining a healthy and vibrant lifestyle. And since many frown on the harmful effects of meat production on our land and water resources, becoming a vegetarian is seen as a positive contribution towards the wise use of our planet&#8217;s resources. </p>

<p><strong>Healthy Eating Means What?</strong></p>
<p>Many people have &#8220;healthy eating&#8221; as a goal, but what does that mean?  Eating healthier can mean any number of things, and usually something different to everyone.  Defining what you mean will help you achieve it.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>As with any destination, if you are not clear about where you are going how will you know when you have arrived. Being clear about your goal helps you know what to do and when you have done it.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Healthy eating can mean:</p>
<p><strong>eating smaller amounts/portions</strong> – Many Americans eat too much food, whether healthy foods or not.  Eating smaller amounts of foods, and therefore calories, can help many people lose weight and minimize their blood sugar and insulin swings.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>eating enough food/calories</strong> – For people who have severely limited their caloric intake, for them the best thing they can do is eat more quality food.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>eating often enough </strong>– This means eating frequently enough to prevent the ferocious hunger feeling that can lead to poor food choices and eating too quickly.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>eating a variety of foods </strong>– Expanding your repertoire of foods gives you a bigger variety of nutrients and antioxidants.  Eating the same few foods over and over, even if they are healthy foods, limits the vitamins and nutrients your body has to work with.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>increasing fiber</strong> – Many Americans do not come close to getting the recommended 20 – 35 grams of fiber daily.  Fiber helps keep you full longer, stabilizes your blood sugar, and keeps your bowels moving regularly.  Some types of fiber can help lower LDL (the &#8220;bad&#8221; cholesterol).</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>eating more antioxidants</strong> – The more variety of antioxidants you eat gives your body more to work with in running smoothly and warding off diseases.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>eating more protein</strong> – Protein is a vital building block, but also helps keep us feeling full and stabilizes our blood sugar because it is digested more slowly than carbohydrates.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>balancing the types of fats eaten </strong>–Switching to mono-unsaturated and omega 3 fatty acids are better for us than eating transfats and too many saturated fats.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>making better snack choices </strong>– Snacks are ideally 100-200 calories and provide some nutritional value.  They give us energy between regular meals.  Snacks with both fiber and protein make great choices (an apple with peanut butter, or cheese and whole grain crackers).</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>prepping foods</strong> – Our food choices are often dictated by convenience.  We may have healthy food in the house but do not feel like washing and cutting it.  Having food ready to go and easy to use (whether buying pre-chopped vegetables or chopping them yourself when you have the time) will make you more likely to choose those foods.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>pre-planning</strong> (shopping, prepping, having good choices available) – Spending the time planning meals and snacks, shopping for them, and preparing what you can in advance goes a long way to making those foods more appealing once you are tired and hungry. Simply having them available increases your chances of eating them.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>paying attention to how you eat</strong> &#8211; Sitting down, eating slowly and enjoying your food can help you eat less and feel more satisfied.  Eating should be a pleasant experience.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>noticing why you eat</strong> – Ideally you should eat only when you are hungry.  This means eliminating emotional and habitual eating.  Think about whether you are really hungry before you reach for the chips when settling into your favorite TV chair, or munch when a deadline is looming.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>changing what you eat when</strong> – Try eating more substantial food for breakfast.  Coffee and toast or cereal may not be enough to keep you going comfortably until lunch.  Dinner leftovers or a sandwich are not off limits for breakfast.  And a small bowl of cereal can be a great snack.</p>
<p> </p>

<p>So what does healthy eating mean to you; on which aspect of healthy eating do you really want to focus?  With that answer you should be better able to make clear and specific goals.  When you are clear about your objective you can more easily get there.</p>

<p><strong>Healthy Eating Encourages Weight Loss</strong></p>
<p>The simple practice of healthy eating encourages your body to lose weight. Healthy eating includes not just what you eat, but how you eat it. Healthy eating includes drinking water and plenty of it. Healthy eating encourages weight loss and is possibly the best diet program today.</p>
<p>Healthy eating includes a diet of lean meats (including fish and chicken), whole-grain cereals, breads and pasta, leafy-green vegetables and fresh fruits. Healthy eating involves tossing out the pre-packaged, pre-processed convenience foods that are higher in fats and chemicals than scratch-made food has.</p>
<p>Healthy eating means that you change your eating habits. Instead of three large meals each day, eat five or six small ones. Eating five or six small meals allows your body to process the food to its fullest extent. Your body takes two-and-a-half to three hours to process the meal you have provided for it. When you eat a big meal, the food that doesn’t get processed gets stored as fat. Eating smaller meals more often allows the digestive system to completely process what it has been given. Excess isn’t stored as fat. This in itself contributes to weight loss.</p>
<p>Healthy eating includes drinking six to eight glasses of water each day. This sounds like a lot; however, that amount is what your body needs. If your body doesn’t get enough water each day, it will store some of the water just as it stores fats. The body stores fat for times when there isn’t enough food. The body stores water for times when there isn’t enough water to drink. One of the primary functions of the liver is the conversion of stored fat to energy. If you don’t drink enough water, the kidneys don’t function in their optimum manner and the liver takes over some of the kidney’s functions. This decreases the capability of the liver to process stored fats and inhibits weight loss.</p>
<p>Healthy eating means paying attention to what you eat and when you eat it. Healthy eating means drinking enough water for your body to function in an optimum manner. Healthy eating means weight loss without any radical diet plan. Healthy eating is the best method for weight loss.</p>

<p>The best way to living a healthy lifestyle, eating healthy and forming healthy eating habits for the long run, has always come from within, within the home that is. We cannot look to others, books, magazines and publications for making us a healthy family or giving us the healthy lifestyle we would want to live. Sure these publications could give us the inspiration and motivation to take that step ourselves and to live a healthy lifestyle of choice. Everything still ends up with the home and family and we need to take that extra step in being courageous consumers when it comes to our choice of food. <br />One of those choices would be whether we want to continue eating obese foods, such as fast food, refined foods, processed foods or bleached foods. We need to take the responsibility and get back to what Mother Nature provided us, with food in its natural form, without any instructions to refine or process these foods. Obesity is directly linked to bad food choices in the form of highly refined carbohydrates and sugars which really is only a form of poison to our bodies. Gone are the days when considering those foods nutritious or beneficial to our families. <br />A solution each of us have available is to return to the bygone years of food production, or processing at home, sure it is less convenient, but the benefits are overwhelming an in a sense, you don’t have to watch what you eat really if you are consuming natural, high fibrous and unprocessed food. These foods will not only provide a healthy lifestyle, but will enable you to take care of a healthy family through healthy cooking and eating.<br />Ways to produce healthy food for your family would be to look at obtaining a grain mill and natural whole wheat grains which you can mill in your own time and for purposes you need such as baking and providing daily natural and fresh bread to your family. Another would be to start a victory garden, or vegetable garden in your back yard or in smaller pots in order to provide your own vegetables and salad items for the table. These foods are so healthy and nutritious for your family that you would reap the benefits almost immediately without worries of consuming unnatural processed and refined foods from the store.<br />Make healthy cooking and eating a priority for your family and the benefits will be seen before long. Benefits would include healthy digestion, disease fighting nutrition, obesity suppression etc. which will lead to a healthy family and lifestyle you will be grateful for. Not to mention the fun and satisfaction in producing your own food, being independent wholly from buying all your food from the supermarket. You can start your journey on the road of independence and take charge of your healthy eating habits, cooking and eating to promote your healthy family<br />A last word on healthy eating habits is this: there are many ways to promote the healthy family lifestyle you want and deserve, look at fresh produce you can grow in your own yard, storing whole grain which will last years, and when milled will give you the best and freshest whole wheat flour you can use for all your healthy cooking requirements. Canning vegetables and sauces is very easy too and is a skill you can learn in a very short time. In a day and age where the economic future is uncertain, being able to produce and store your own healthy food is vital to your health and lifestyle you would like to preserve</p>

<p><strong>Healthy Eating Plans And Oatmeal? Are You For Real?</strong></p>
<p>Oatmeal at times is labeled the bad guy. No way should it be part of your healthy eating plans or healthy eating guidelines. It contains carbohydrates or it is all sugar. Too many uninformed people jump to conclusions that just because something has sugar in it means it is bad for you. That is not the case.</p>
<p>There are many varieties of oatmeal and it is true that many are not the healthiest forms of oatmeal and should not be included in your healthy eating plans. The least processed oatmeal is called Steel-cut oats, which are chopped oat groats. There are also rolled oats and these oats are steamed. Then the most popular and generally the least healthy for you&#8217;re healthy eating plans are instant oats, which are precooked and often contain added sugar.</p>
<p>Steel cut or rolled oats can be used as long lasting energy because of the type of carbohydrate that they are. You can even make a healthy shake out of them by combining 1/2 cup rolled oats, 1 scoop Prograde Protein Powder and 1.5 cups water. Oats of a healthy kind are usually eaten in what we think of as conventional ways, but this doesn&#8217;t have to be the case. Think outside the box a little to discover other ways to include healthy oatmeal into your healthy eating guidelines and healthy diet plans.</p>
<p>Nutritionally a one half cup serving of cooked steel-cut oats has 150 calories, 5gms of protein, 27gms of carbs and 4gms of fiber. One packet of plain instant oats has 100 calories, 4gms of protein, 19gms of carbs and 3gms of fiber. As you can see they have similar nutritional profiles with the steel cut oats being a little higher in overall carbohydrates and fiber. Now some would say that the instant oats would be better for your healthy eating plans, but if you notice I wrote &#8220;plain&#8221; instant oats. How many of you actually eat &#8220;plain&#8221; instant oats. What you see on the store shelves are instant oats that are usually flavored with something and many times filled with added sugar.</p>
<p>If you want to eat instant oats make sure you are selecting the proper type of instant oats for your healthy eating plans. You can always add chopped fruit, cinnamon or other low calorie flavorings to your oatmeal.</p>
<p>Some people are under the assumption that steel cut oats can not be made quickly and have to be cooked for long periods of time. Another way is available. In a large microwave bowl combine 1/2 cup steel cut oats, 1/2 cup 1% milk and 1/2 cup water. Microwave for 4 minutes, stir and then cook for 2 more minutes. While I am giving you a microwave recipe, I am not suggesting that you cook all your meals in a microwave. Though if you need a quick healthy oatmeal recipe to use every now and then this is it.</p>
<p>Continuing with thinking outside of the box have you ever tried substituting oats for bread crumbs in just about any recipe? All you have to do is use a food processor and finely chop the oats. Then you can add them to ground beef to be used in meatloaf or use them as breading for fish fillets or chicken fillets. Just because something has carbohydrates or sugar does not mean that it cannot be included in your healthy eating plans or healthy diet plans. If you pay attention to the full nutrient profile and come up with unconventional ways to use that food, you will find that you can incorporate it into your healthy eating plans.</p>

Change them over some time not all at once. This is the most common mistake and why many people fail when deciding to make a diet change.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;re aware at how portion sizes have increased over the years. Everyone wants to get a good value for their dollar so portion sizes have increased in many restaurants to achieve the value people have been looking for. You can still go to a restaurant just try to make sure you are limiting your portions if you have to only eat half at dinner and save the rest for lunch the next day.</p>
